Pasture Raised on the Mother Road

Created in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Route 66, this painted sculpture reimagines the iconic highway shield as a tribute to the American egg farmers in the heartland — where open roads meet open pastures. Installed at Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park and sponsored by Vital Farms, the design draws inspiration from the brand’s farming roots “pasture raised” ethos while embracing my signature use of vibrant color.

This work celebrates the quiet beauty of the rolling hills and agricultural roots that define Springfield and the broader Route 66 corridor. Rutledge-Wilson Park is a personal favorite of mine, having spent many afternoons here with my children when they were younger. I’ve always been drawn to its peaceful landscape and sense of community, qualities I aim to capture with this whimsical illustrative work.

Route 66 and the hard-working farmers along it have long symbolized food movement, possibility, and the spirit of the American heartland. In this piece, the warmth of familiar farm imagery and the playfulness of color evoke comfort and memory, while the contemporary vibrancy suggests optimism for the road ahead. As the Mother Road turns 100, this work honors both where we’ve been and the bright horizon still unfolding before us.
