Artist Statement
It’s a privilege to have been selected to decorate a Route 66 100th anniversary sculpture. With Springfield being designated as the birthplace of Route 66, it’s easy to feel a connection to the “Mother Road.” The design that I submitted for consideration is the highway rising into a sunset background. Springfield is where Route 66 takes a more westward direction, and my rendition represents riding into the sunset.
I often take pictures while traveling around the area, and several of these pictures were used as inspiration for this artwork. The work will be completed with acrylic paints and will be placed at West College Street and Scenic Avenue.

Randy Clute
Randy has enjoyed drawing and painting throughout his lifetime.
He graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, PA. As a career, he was employed at the Assemblies of God headquarters in Springfield, where he worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, and Design Department supervisor for 44 years. In retirement, Randy continues to be involved in publication design.
As the designer for the Missouri State, OzarksWatch magazine, he recently completed the Fall, Winter 2025-26 issue, which commemorates the centennial of the founding of Route 66.
Randy periodically paints with a local Plein Air group and enjoys projects like this, which get him away from his computer and puts a brush in his hand.
